The brewing tradition in Rožňava, like their mining tradition, is almost a thousand years old. The history of the royal town, which is first mentioned in writing in 1291, is closely intertwined with the mining of gold, silver, copper, and iron ores. But wealth was not hidden only in the mines, whether on the surface or underground. German mining masters also brought the craft of beer brewing to Gemer.

The region’s brewing peaked in the 18th century, when 13 breweries operated simultaneously in the royal town. This period is still considered the golden age of brewing in Rožňava and Upper Gemer. The aim of the Kaltenecker brewery, which was founded in Rožňava in 1997, is to build on this tradition. Here, too, they brew beer from quality ingredients only and according to the traditional recipes. In Kaltenecker, however, they set out in the opposite direction compared to large breweries. They do not offer large-scale industrial production, but honest craftsmanship combined with product diversity.

The current master brewer of Kaltenecker, Marián Bednár, confirmed that the production of the beer itself has not changed for centuries, even though the technology they use has. The brewery makes a few basic lagers and, since they do like to experiment, a lot of specials. The specials are brewed from 100% malt and the brewery does not use any stabilizers. Thanks to their distinctive approach and long-term quality, the Rožňava brewery has caused the world to discover Slovak beer. No Slovak brewery has more awards to its name than Kaltenecker. Its specials have received recognition in the form of medals from beer festivals all around the world. It has also become a popular tourist destination. In addition to its magical nature or historical monuments, the Gemer region has also added a tour of today's oldest craft brewery in Slovakia to the list of attractions. Karolína Balogh Makovníková, the brewery’s assistant director, confirmed that visitors are especially curious to see what the brewery looks like inside. They can witness the production and the technology used. Of course, there is also the beer tasting itself.
