Traditional production of happiness

Ivano-Frankivsk region Handicrafts
Lizhnyk production is tied to the mountain rivers on which Hutsuls built wooden fulling baths called valylos. Fulling makes the loosely-woven blankets denser, fluffier and resistant to further shrinkage. After fulling, woollen lizhnyks are washed and loosened. Sadly, the flood of 2008 destroyed one of the last ancient valylos located in the geographic heart of lizhnyk production - the Hutsul village of Yavoriv. Following the flood, the Pavliuk family built two valylos on their land for their use and also for the village’s felting industry. Since then, most of Yavoriv's blankets are continuously bathing in these village valylos.

Svitlana Pavliuk is one Yavoriv’s few experts who is ready to organise master classes on wool fulling. In addition to her love of weaving, she has another goal in life - to help people. Svitlana introduces visitors to local weavers who, in turn, introduce the loom.

Sheep, wool, threads, small handlooms and nimble women’s hands - the ingredients for Carpathian lizhnyk production for over 500 years. International popularity caught on relatively recently - in the 1930s - when the blankets made their debut at an international trade fair in Vienna. Since that time, lizhnyks have become a livelihood and symbol of prosperity for Yavoriv. Lizhnyks are especially honoured here where they are laid at the feet of young people to ensure good fortune and even sent with loved ones on their final journey in life.

In 2019, Svitlana organised weaving courses when she recruited five weavers from the village and encouraged them to teach the craft to several American tourists. For five days, guests from across the ocean spun and weaved, becoming acquainted with local colour patterns including those of the neighbouring villages Kosmach and Sheshory. Guests also played with a local music trio in an improvised orchestra. Since 2022, the Pavliuk family accommodates up to 40 guests a day in their B&B, providing delicious food, lizhnyk-making lessons and relaxation in splendid Carpathian nature. Unwittingly, these guests are links in a centuries-old chain of production of both warm woollen handcrafts and human happiness.
