If the stones could tell stories… even hen houses are made of stones in this area of the Zemplén. Stones boast with a long tradition and enjoy a lot of respect – not to mention the various minerals. They’ll tell us a lot about history and nature, as well as the humans who worked them.

  • Day 1: Boldogkőváralja
Arrival in Boldogkőváralja and lunch at the restaurant of the castle of medieval atmosphere (Castrum Boldua); then discovering the castle. The characteristic Lion’s Rock of the building, one of the most photographed sights of the Zemplén, the star of Instagram, stands at the end of a 20-metre-high narrow ridge. At certain times costumed tours and period castle games are held in the castle, which soars on a huge, barren rock ridge. Not only its exhibitions, but its panorama is also special. Then you will wander around TERRA – Boldogkő Experience-Based Historical Educational Cellar. The main events and figures of Hungarian history come to life in the form of sculptures carved in stone in the twelve branches of the cellar system of 460 meters length. Dinner and pálinka tasting in the visitor centre of BESTILLO Pálinka House. You can also view the factory, where the high-quality pálinkas and the unique gin are made. You will be lucky enough to taste the lightest and tastiest homemade donut in the area - with jam and syrups made from apricots from Gönc. Accommodation: 2 nights with breakfast in the mysterious Völgykapu Hunting Lodge set in a fabulous environment.

  1. Telkibánya
After a substantial and delicious breakfast consisting of local products, you will travel to Telkibánya, where József Bartók, aka Telkimanó, takes you on an excursion to find out about and collect minerals. When he has pleasantly exhausted you, you will have lunch at the same place and then visit the Ore and Mineral Mining Museum, where spectacular models present the work that took place in the former mines. In addition to period tools and the objects of industrial history, you will also learn about the typical minerals and ceramics of the region. A walk follows to the cemetery with wooden grave markers and the chapel, from where you will go on an excursion in a gorge in Pányok. Dinner will be served in the yard of Farmer Sándor, who offers oven-baked delicacies.

  1. Gönc – Tokaj
In the morning you’ll say goodbye to the Zemplén and, if it is the right day, on your way you’ll stop by to do some shopping and tasting at Tokaj-Hegyalja Market, where the craaftspeople and producers of the region bring the best of their goods; or, optionally, you can have a stop in Tarcal at the monumental statue and viewpoint of the Blessing Christ offering a fine panorama. From there you’ll then travel on to Tokaj, where you can have a look at the mineral collection of the World Heritage Wine Museum. Lunch at LaBor Bistro in Tokaj, where the finest wines of Tokaj-Hegyalja are coupled with dishes prepared from base materials supplied by local producers.
