A Taste of Gemer

The village of Jablonov nad Turňou - Granarium Taste of the region
Refractory clay has always been mined in Gemer. The main product made of it was ceramics, which was used mainly for baking in ovens. There was therefore a tradition to prepare dishes in clay ovens. This Gemerian tradition was rediscovered by a couple, Silvia and Lórant Papai, who restored the local medieval granary in Jablonov nad Turňou, called Granárium. It was there they revived the methods of baking bread and preparing various dishes in outside ovens.

Ovens were often part of old houses, only no one used them anymore. This gradually changed. Traditional ovens are especially practical and functional. What they are not, however, are carbon copies of each other, as each of the masters who used to build (or who still build them), the ovens had (and have) their own construction techniques. Therefore, each oven is different and it takes some time for its owner to learn to cook and bake in it. Well then all you need is a good cook, a little imagination, quality ingredients, and, especially, a good bit of time, and the result is a culinary pleasure.

This attraction is getting more and more renowned owing mainly to the positive experiences of those who have experienced the culinary pleasures related to the preparation of dishes in traditional ovens. The Papai family has thus managed to revive one of the original traditions of Gemer. The important thing is that more and more people in the region are adopting it, meaning that it is here to stay for future generations. This is good news for Gemer - the combination of beautiful nature, skillful and welcoming people and good food prepared in a traditional way is a great basis for the further development of tourism.
