Vineyards in the Palm of Your Hand

The village of Veľká Tŕňa Traditional liquides
The smell of rows of vines, the sun glinting between them, the chill of tuff cellars and the intoxicating taste of wine in your mouth. The winemaker Matúš Vdovjak, who follows in the footsteps of his family’s winemaking tradition, will prove to you the good reputation of the Tokaj region.

Matúš and Ivana Vdovjak are behind the Víno Vdovjak brand. The story of this family micro-winery began in 2007 with the reconstruction and cleaning of an old Tokaj cellar in Veľká Třňa. They are already the sixth generation that has been taking care of these vineyards on the old historical estates. They have always been owned by their family. The cultivated Tokaj varieties include, of course, the Furmint, Lipovina and Muscat yellow. On the Keska estate, there are historical entrances to the Tokaj underground, with the first ones dug by our ancestors as early as the 16th century. These are among the most beautiful places in all of Tokaj. Matúš Vdovjak's wine also matures in two such historic cellars. Constant temperature around 10 °C, high relative humidity, and constant darkness together create the ideal conditions for maturing delicious wines.

"I’d always dreamed of making a living from winemaking, agrotourism, doing tastings, providing accommodation, offering a whole package of services," recalls Matúš Vdovjak. "We didn't want anything big or mainstream. We wanted traditional viticulture and winemaking, to have our own vineyards, to try to do it honestly and well. Develop communities, give work to people of the region. This was our goal - and it still remains so. We still have a long way to go. We are lucky, however, to operate in a region that has a rich history and a strong wine tradition." Winemakers should strive to be independent and try to make their wine in what they believe is the right way. To draw on historical knowledge, on their experience and the experience of generations of winemakers who made wine before them. Modern technologies can make the work of a winegrower and winemaker easier and more efficient, but they should not fundamentally change the character and feel of their wines. "We do not interfere with the wine, we do not filter it, we do not use noble yeast, enzymatic preparations, and none of the permitted oenological interventions. Our aim is not to make the perfect wine. The pursuit of perfection is a path towards boredom and uniformity. Our goal is to produce wine that will most truly and beautifully reveal the beauty of the given vintage of Tokaj in Veľká Třňa.” The Vdovjak family will be happy to present their wines in person at their place of birth. You will be able to enjoy a pleasant and homely atmosphere in a small Tokaj cellar, where tasting by candlelight is a truly original experience. You can also spend the night in the old farmhouse, the attic of which has been remodeled to create small, cozy rooms. In the morning, you’ll enjoy a rich breakfast on the dewy terrace and discover the beauties that Tokaj has to offer.
