In the fire of burnt clay

Satu Mare county Handicrafts

The story of pottery has been around for a long time. For thousands of years, people have worked the clay, added elements that symbolize the essence of their lives, and burned it in the furnace fire. The Dacian kilns from Medieșu Aurit depict the history of the Dacian people in these lands.

The old Dacian custom of pottery was perpetuated in Vama. Master Geza Istvanfi learned the secrets of this ancestral family craft, his grandfather and father being potters. It is true that at that time there were dozens of craftsmen, 32 families of potters and a pottery workshop. Now Geza is the last potter in Vama, on his way to become a Living Heritage.

In his workshop from home, Geza produces a variety of items, from small handicraft souvenirs to plates, bowls, mugs, brandy glasses, wine jugs. But what really makes him famous are the sarmale (stuffed cabbage) pots. "They are looking for me from all over the country for these pots, which give a special aroma to the food cooked in them, but they also have a very high resistance, due to the rich iron clay in the area," says the potter.

The clay from which they are made is brought from the exact same place where the master's grandfather took it. It is carried home with the cart, then it is kneaded until it becomes good to work with. A special role is played by the potter's wheel or the modeling wheel. It is the hardest part of pottery work.

“I process and model the raw material, and my wife deals with the paintings that can be found on the vessels, but also with the glazing of the ceramics. Our daughter Maria is the one who carries on the family tradition. She decided to take over the craft, even to adapt it to the requirements of the modern market and, thanks to her, a new range of products is in great demand among customers", says master Geza.

The uniqueness of Vama ceramics has always been given by its very pastel colors. The drawings are also made with soil obtained from the area. Black is made with earth taken from a place that the craftsman knows from his grandfather. Red is found in the forest, especially in spring, when the color is more vivid. White is found in small lumps in the field. The green is obtained by mixing the verdigris from pieces of copper in white clay.

The passion of clay does not give him peace even when he leaves the workshop. He is also a passionate collector of old objects from the village world, especially clay pots. In the house he also arranged a small museum with the objects he collected.

When you arrive at the Potter's House, watch his skillful hands, as they soften the tender clay and turn it into unseen shapes.
