The traditional costume of Oaș

Satu Mare county Handicrafts

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the folk costume was part of the daily life of rural communities in the border area. There was no household in which no textile yarn was made, no weaving and no sewing. Throughout the twentieth century and especially after the 50's, the folk costume made entirely in the peasant household is easily abandoned, parts of the costume are now completely replaced, the materials used, the same. Some communities lose their traditional costumes and part of their identity. Other communities, such as those in Ţara Oașului, more conservative, kept the folk costume but introduced new pieces, new materials, so that the folk costume turned into a parade costume.

The folk costume has become today, with an enviable speed, a brand. Each community seeks to restore its original costumes, which set it apart from other communities, but no doubt today, this is very difficult to accomplish and often impossible. Rediscovering the costume, highlighting it and using it as an element of identity involves a great responsibility that we must all be aware of.

Anica Mare, a fierce woman from Oaș, who, by adapting her traditional craft, managed to promote Țara Oașului, knows the traditions and customs of Oaș, but especially the characteristics of the traditional costume. She cuts and sews small-scale traditional clothes with which the dolls are “dressed”, decorates hats, decorates bottles of brandy, creates business cards and memories that talk about Țara Oașului and about its people.

"I have certain phases, which I have to respect: I knit it, I make boots, shirts, then I cut the ‘pindileu’ (white skirt) and ‘zadie’ (traditional apron). For the brides, I make a wreath and put collars", says Anica.

Through the dolls made by the craftswoman …. the “mother of dolls”, Țara Oașului has reached all corners of the world.

She turned her house in Bixad into a workshop and the dolls dressed in the traditional costume are hosts everywhere in the house. Mother Ana hopes that her daughter-in-law, Doina, would keep alive the craft of the dolls from Oaș and that her passion for knitting and making collars and other ornaments would blend harmoniously with the vivid colours of the miniature Oaș dress.

Anica gladly participates in the gatherings, together with the "aunts" of Oaş, true living treasures, sacred keepers of the traditional costume of Oş, whose testimonies of life deserve to be listened to with reverence. At the gathering you can see traditional work, such as spinning hemp and wool, scraping hemp threads, unwinding wool, ‘făcutul ițelor pe lopată’, complemented by more current occupations: making collars, necklaces and other folk ornaments. The atmosphere is maintained with area-specific shoutings, wit, riddles and a traditional meal.
